High Contrast with Color

Using a color from the original image

I chose this color because it seemed to create a natural, yet interesting feeling to the image. There still appears to be an opposition within the image, yet it feels more whole since the color is what binds the two sides together.

Sadness

I did some research, and there seems to be an almost universal sad or relaxed feeling associated with the color blue. Since my photo portrayed a relaxed an slightly sad puppy, I thought a dark blue would be the ideal color to convey this mood. I divided it the way I did in order to create an abstract sort of rain cloud.

Joy

As an opposition to the sad relaxed feeling, I chose a light yellow to create a sense of carefree joy. I used more yellow than blue in comparison to the last photo to try to get rid of the color black, which seems to oppose the joyous feeling I am trying to convey. I also used it to symbolize a sort of light piercing through the darkness of the image.

Elements of Design

  • The darkish gray appears to be the ground in the relationship, with the other elements overlapping each other on top of the ground, the elongated splotches appear to create conflicting movements from both the left and right side of the image.

  • It appears as if the white is the figure in the figure ground relationship, there appears to be two white splotches due to the black space in between the two main groups(good example of proximity), the elongated white spots create a sense of movement within the image.

  • The purple seems to act as the ground, while the more intense colors on both sides of the image act as opposing forces. The purple background seems to recede while the black and the oranges and yellows appear to pop. The yellow and pink seem to act as highlights for the orange, while the dark blue act as highlights for the black in the upper left portion of the image. The fact that the yellow and orange appear to move in similar directions and the notion that they are close to one another on the color wheel, add to the idea that the yellow are simply highlights. the orange and the black seem to be the main focus of the image, since they occupy the largest amount of space.

  • My observations were pretty much in line with other people's thoughts. The mentioned the proximity in my images of the colors which gave them an appearance as a whole. They almost all commented on the movement within my image, which is emphasized in the transition of the shapes of the colors.
